5 Tips to Help You Lose Weight and Keep it off!

I see so many patients who either struggle to lose weight or gain their weight back after losing significant amounts on strict, low calorie diets. Although these diets can be a great way to kick start a weight loss program it is essential to work with a doctor to ensure you are setting yourself up for success both short and long term.

Here are my top 5 tips for losing weight and keeping it off!

1. Balance: before starting your weight loss program work with your doctor to make sure your hormones are balanced. For example, often patients present with symptoms of hypo or low functioning thyroid but their lab tests are “normal”. Testing actual circulating hormones, such as T4 and T3, can reveal that the body is not hormonally balanced which will result in the inability to lose weight and even weight gain.

2. Food sensitivities: many patients restrict their calories, eat high protein, low carb diets and still cannot lose weight. This can indicate that the food they are consuming, even if they are healthy, are creating an imbalance resulting in a weight loss roadblock. It’s important to work with your doctor to create the right weight loss program for your own body.

3. Sleep: if you are not sleeping well your will not lose weight. And it’s not the number of hours you spend in bed; it’s the quality of sleep you are getting. Factors such as pain, hormone imbalance, stress and anxiety all factor into quality of sleep. A person who does not get enough quality sleep will produce more stress hormones that will directly impact their weight.

4. Water: this one is easy. If you do not drink enough water you will not lose weight. Alternatively, the more water you drink (to a limit) the more weight you will lose. My patients who are following a ketogenic weight loss program notice significant improvement in weight loss when they drink more than two liters of water a day. The opposite is true when they consume less than one liter a day: weight loss is stalled!

5. Stabilization: sometimes weight loss is the easiest part; it’s keeping the weight off that is the real challenge. When the body loses a significant amount of weight in a short period of time the brain turns off it’s set metabolic rate. In order to reestablish this set rate your weight must remain stabile for a period of time. This means that weight fluctuations will keep the metabolic rate off and over time this is why weight creeps back on. With every patient I work with to lose weight we continue after the weight loss to ensure stabilization is reached and a new metabolic rate is established. The result: successful weight loss that stays off!
