Is Your Gut Making You Irritable?

As a Naturopathic physician I believe that good health starts in the gut. Did you know that 95% of our body’s serotonin in produced in the gut. Serotonin is our “feel good” neurotransmitter and along with influencing our mood, it is also plays a role in gastrointestinal activity as well as pain response. Research has shown that there is a direct correlation between gut health and brain health.

It is not surprising that digestive complaints are among the most common reasons that individuals seek medical care. It is estimated that 25% of the population suffer from abdominal discomfort, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, gas and bloating.

The majority of these people will go from one specialist to another with no change in their condition, and will be given the diagnosis of “Irritable bowel syndrome”. Often these patients will eventually end up in my waiting room, feeling frustrated and hopeless.

Commonly food sensitivities are involved, but I also find enzyme deficiencies and bacterial overgrowth also play a role. That is why I offer comprehensive digestive stool analysis (CDSA) and SIBO breath testing.

The SIBO breath test is a simple test that can determine if the cause of your IBS is from bacterial overgrowth. Up to 84% of people given the diagnosis IBS, in reality have a bacterial overgrowth that is causing their digestive complaints.

Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis is a valuable tool that reveals the state of our digestive system. This test not only shows how well we are digesting are food, but also how much of our food is actually getting absorbed. It also tests for excess bacterial and yeast activity and parasites. It is very useful in identifying chronic digestive dysfunction.

If you suffer from indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, gas and bloating, abdominal pain, or have been diagnosed with IBS it is time to get to the root cause of the problem. Dr. Falk can help.
